Re: Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H School Enrichment Program: At a Warren County School Near You!

Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE)/4-H of Warren County contacted a total of 3000 youth with their school enrichment programs throughout Warren County between September 2009 and June 2010.  These contacts were divided nearly equally in rural school districts like Johnsburg and North Warren and urban or suburban school districts like Glens Falls and Queensbury.  This fact helps dispel the myth that Cornell Cooperative Extension and 4-H are just for “rural” residents.

While the vast majority of these contacts are made by the Bike Safety program which assists schools in meeting New York State law that requires them to teach bicycle safety as part of physical education, there were many other programs that were conducted.  The other topics included embryology, archery, team building, environmental field days, and agricultural or geospatial literacy.

The challenging budget situations created by a slow economic environment has caused many schools to reduce or eliminate some field trips.  In many cases, CCE/4-H staff travel to the school and provide enrichment programs at limited or no cost to the schools in replacement of these trips.  While CCE encourages field trips as experiential education, they also realize the reality of everyone’s budget and are happy to work with these youth.  Programs are all ready being booked for the 2010-2011 school year!

This project was underwritten by the Glenn & Carol Pearsall Adirondack Foundation, “Dedicated to improving the quality of life for year-round residents of the Adirondack Park.” www.pearsallfoundation.org
